The rarely seen paintings of Laurie Lee Laurie Lee, best known for his autobiographical trilogy, including the book Cider with Rosie, was also an artist. On the centenary of his birth, his daughter Jessy shares some of his rarely seen art works Here he lived with his mother Annie and his seven siblings, wolfing down suppers of lentil stew, reading by lamplight, building from a discarded rabbit hutch a bookcase that he nailed to his bedroom wall and filled with the works of Dickens, Yeats and D H Lawrence. Set in an age without regular newspapers, radio or television, the village he described existed in a bubble of self-sufficiency, cut off from the outside world by the wooded crests of its enfolding hills. Lee was growing up in the sunset of a rural England in which the old order, shaken to its roots by the Great War, would never be the same. Cider with Rosie is more than autobiography. The book took two years to complete and was rewritten three times. Published in , it sold more than six million copies and has never been out of print. I was lunching in Nailsworth and a waitress introduced me to her. Now in her 80s, she has cornflower-blue eyes still as clear as when they beguiled Laurie, and they sparkled mischievously when she described their first date together — an evening at the cinema when he was 32 and she not yet

History[ edit ] Location of Qumran Since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in — , extensive excavations have taken place in Qumran. Nearly scrolls were discovered. Most were written on parchment and some on papyrus. Cisterns , Jewish ritual baths , and cemeteries have been found, along with a dining or assembly room and debris from an upper story alleged by some to have been a scriptorium as well as pottery kilns and a tower.
Many scholars believe the location was home to a Jewish sect , probably the Essenes. But, according to Lawrence Schiffman , the rules of the community, its heavy stress on priesthood and the Zadokite legacy, and other details indicate a Sadducean -oriented sect either distinct from or one of the various Essene groupings. A large cemetery was discovered to the east of the site.
While most of the graves contain the remains of males, some females were also discovered, though some burials may be from medieval times. Only a small portion of the graves were excavated, as excavating cemeteries is forbidden under Jewish law. Over a thousand bodies are buried at Qumran cemetery. Some scholars have claimed that the caves were the permanent libraries of the sect, due to the presence of the remains of a shelving system.
Other scholars believe that some caves also served as domestic shelters for those living in the area. Many of the texts found in the caves appear to represent widely accepted Jewish beliefs and practices, while other texts appear to speak of divergent, unique, or minority interpretations and practices. A literary epistle published in the s expresses reasons for creating a community, some of which resemble Sadducean arguments in the Talmud.

Share Shares 2K The world is full of bizarre and mysterious artifacts. While many of them are almost certainly hoaxes or have improbable theories attached to them, many more are truly mysterious or have outlandish histories. About 18 nonidentical fragmentary versions of these stone cuneiform artifacts have been found, the most comprehensive of which is the Weld-Blundell prism in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Researchers initially thought that they were straightforward historical documents, but as more complete versions came to light, it became obvious that many of the kings were either wholly or partially mythological. Rulers that should have been there were sometimes omitted. Others had implausibly long reigns or had mythical accounts attached to them or to the time of their reigns, such as the Sumerian account of a great flood and accounts of the exploits of Gilgamesh.
Why were the Sumerians so careful to document a line of kings while at the same time slipping in references that they had to know were mythological? This would seem to undermine the historical purpose of the document. One possible answer lies in the early history of Sumer. Cities such as Kish, Ur, and Akshak were all originally sovereign walled cities complete with their own gods, and political power belonged to the people.
But as inter-city rivalry increased, the institution of kingship took hold, so the prevailing view is that the document became a political tool for cementing religious and political hegemony between the cities, providing the justification for the rulers to unite them into one civilization. More fantastically inclined people have also made several claims about the King List.

Just north of the Middle Atlas Mountains, this former Moroccan capital and imperial city is home to the mother of all medinas, dating from the ninth century. Born within its time-scarred walls, he knows its secret squares and dog-leg shortcuts inside out, and leads us Pied Piper-like through the maze as part of a half-day cookery course that will teach us how to prepare classic Moroccan dishes such as harira soup, baghrir Berber pancakes and fish tajine.
Mehdi has come along to translate, clearly relishing the chance to slip away from the reception desk and show us his home town. A doorway down a backstreet of Fes Photo: The medina presents a beguiling mix of activity and repose, of the sensual and the nauseous. Men in djellabas doze on piles of carpets while coppersmiths beat out intricate patterns on huge trays. Back at Palais Amani, we chop and grate and stir, then feast on our dishes in its tree-shaded courtyard decorated with blue and white tiles and plashing fountains.
To save time, Houssam has filmed some of the cooking processes on his phone, and we are given recipes, spices and an apron to take home. The real reward, though, is the way this entertaining cook-up provides an insight into life within the medina. In my view the city offers a far more authentic and atmospheric short break than better-known Marrakesh, which is now swamped with luxury hotels, designer shops, tour buses and conference venues.
Hideous Kinky has, sadly, turned into Carrefour. By contrast, the medina in Fes remains wondrously intense and startling — and nowhere makes this clearer than its star sight, the unremittingly stinking tanneries of Chouwara.
